Course Details

Thermal imaging cameras are not point-and-shoot. Many factors, such as ambient surroundings and camera settings, can affect the final image. This is one of the reasons why thermal imaging training is important. It’s one of the best ways to avoid common mistakes and create accurate and actionable reports.

Approved to industry standards, the Thermal Imaging Category 1 course gives delegates a functional foundation in infrared thermography. The four day course includes both theoretical and practical exercises, delivering a well-balanced training experience that’s relevant to current commercial needs.

Suited for beginners and those with no previous experience, the Thermal Imaging Category 1 course teaches delegates to use infrared cameras to inspect surface temperatures, monitor heat transfer and find faults associated with heat loss or gain. During the course, delegates will also have the opportunity to try out the latest thermal imaging cameras and equipment.

Successful completion of the course will enable delegates to become certified thermographers within industry, enabling them to start offering thermal imaging as a professional service.

Day 1
Thermal Camera Set-Up, Thermal Camera Operation, Thermal Camera Calibration, Basics of Infrared Thermography

Day 2
Thermal Image Processing, Practical Exercises, Condition Monitoring, Basic Fault Detection

Day 3
Professional Practice, Emissivity, RAT & IFoV, Reporting & Documentation

Day 4
Applications of Thermal Imaging, Course Revision Session, Final Examination

Accreditation provides independent assurance that you’re not just qualified, but competent in operating a thermal imaging camera.

The Thermal Imaging Category 1 course is eligible for optional accreditation by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) to the BS EN ISO 18436 standard.

To obtain this accreditation, delegates will need to provide a ‘logbook of experience’ to BINDT for approval. A logbook of experience contains:

Proof of 16 hours a month of thermal imaging experience, totalling 192 hours for the year.

‘Thermal imaging experience’ can include time surveying, creating reports or self-study. A logbook of experience can also be back-dated.

Delegates will also need to sit a BINDT assessed thermal imaging exam, however this is included within the accreditation fee and completed at the end of your course.

Choosing an optional accreditation gives you an edge on your competitors, however it can take longer than a standard qualification, especially if you’re new to industry. To make this easier, we provide all delegates with an iRed Qualification upon successful completion of a course. This provides you with an industry-recognised qualification that you can use to advertise your new skills, which will help you to build your logbook of experience for accreditation.

Successful completion of the Thermography Category 1 qualification requires delegates to pass an examination and submit five thermal imaging reports to the iRed Academy for assessment.

The examination (multiple-choice) will take place on the last day of the course, and the five thermal imaging reports can be submitted to the iRed Academy up to a year after course completion.

iRed is an industry-leading thermal imaging consultancy and training centre, providing specialist thermal imaging surveys and accredited infrared training across the UK and worldwide.

In operation before thermal imaging had been accepted as a mainstream inspection tool, iRed has always used the latest techniques, technologies and industry practices to deliver thermal analysis solutions for a variety of clients within commercial, industrial and scientific industries.

iRed works closely with leading education institutions including the University of Portsmouth and Coleg Cambria. In doing so, the team has been able to pioneer new techniques and practices for industry. This has led to iRed being accredited by both the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing and the Awarding Body of the Built Environment.

iRed training courses are delivered by industry experts, each with many years of teaching experience.

Our instructors have delivered hundreds of accredited thermal imaging courses, seminars, workshops and presentations since 2002. Courses have been delivered to multi-national organisations, global brands, universities, local authorities and small businesses throughout the world.

By working closely with leading educational institutions such as the University of Portsmouth, we’re able to ensure our courses are are constantly up-to-date with the latest techniques and practices from industry.
