Further Information

Building Thermal Imaging Category 2 is a five-day training course for those who want to expand their existing skills and knowledge. The course teaches delegates how to lead a team of thermographers in surveying residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

This training course builds on the fundamentals of the Category 1 qualification and aims to explore thermal imaging surveys in a greater depth. In addition to the Advanced Principles of Thermal Imaging, covering heat transfer principles and infrared radiation, the course teaches IR Camera Operating Characteristics and further Analysis of Thermal Images. Delegates will develop their knowledge of Thermal Indexing, as well as the elements involved in the Thermodynamics of Buildings – including thermal bridges, and any potential external influences.

As this course is designed for the built environment, course content also features the construction of domestic and commercial buildings in the context of thermal imaging surveys. The study of Professional Practice, including the ethical principles and standards adopted by experienced thermographers, provides delegates with the knowledge needed to confidently lead thermal imaging surveys for a range of buildings.

This course provides delegates with the knowledge they need to successfully carry out thermal imaging surveys for a variety of building types. It allows practicing thermographers to develop their existing thermal imaging skills for wider applications.

Our thermal imaging training courses are industry-focused, providing extra insight and guidance for commercial applications. As commercial surveyors and inspectors, our instructors have a wealth of knowledge and experience that can’t be found at any other training centre.

The course fee includes a student study guide, templates, tuition and daily lunch & refreshments.

This course requires delegates to hold a Category 1 qualification or equivalent.

Those attending the course are not required to own a thermal imaging camera. All equipment for training will be provided for the duration of the course.

Delegates will require a thermal imaging camera for their final assessment, which involves submitting five thermal imaging reports to the iRed Academy for assessment. These are available to hire from the iRed store. Learn more: store.ired.co.uk/hire

Successful completion of the Building Thermal Imaging Category 2 Course requires delegates to pass one iRed Theory Examination, which takes place on the final day of the course. They must also submit five thermal imaging reports to the iRed Academy for assessment, which can be completed up to a year after the end of the course.

Accreditation provides independent assurance that you’re not just qualified, but competent in operating a thermal imaging camera.

The Building Thermal Imaging Category 2 course is eligible for optional accreditation by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) to the BS EN ISO 18436 standard.

To obtain this accreditation, delegates will need to provide a ‘logbook of experience’ to BINDT for approval. A logbook of experience contains:

Proof of 16 hours a month of thermal imaging experience, totalling 192 hours for the year.

‘Thermal imaging experience’ can include time surveying, creating reports or self-study. A logbook of experience can also be back-dated.

Delegates will also need to sit a BINDT assessed thermal imaging exam, however this is included within the accreditation fee and completed at the end of your course.

The course is also eligible for accreditation to the ISO 6781 standard.

To obtain this accreditation, delegates will need to sit 2 x ABBE examinations and submit a Portfolio of Evidence for assessment. This portfolio includes three thermal imaging reports and associated documents.

Choosing an optional accreditation gives you an edge on your competitors, however it can take longer than a standard qualification, especially if you’re new to industry. To make this easier, we provide all delegates with an iRed Qualification upon successful completion of a course. This provides you with an industry-recognised qualification that you can use to advertise your new skills, which will help you to build your logbook of experience for accreditation.

iRed training courses are delivered by industry experts, each with many years of teaching experience.

Our instructors have delivered hundreds of accredited thermal imaging courses, seminars, workshops and presentations since 2002. Courses have been delivered to multi-national organisations, global brands, universities, local authorities and small businesses throughout the world.

By working closely with leading educational institutions such as the University of Portsmouth, we’re able to ensure our courses are are constantly up-to-date with the latest techniques and practices from industry.
