Course Description

Drone pilots who want to fly beyond the limitations of the Standard Permission for Commercial Operations (PfCO) will require an Operating Safety Case (OSC).

An OSC is a comprehensive document, providing evidence of a pilot’s ability to operate in a certain environment.  Delegates on this course gain the knowledge to apply for their OSC from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

One benefit of an OSC is altitude extension, which allows pilots to fly higher than 400 ft. It also enables these pilots to conduct Extended Visual Line of Sight (EVLOS), as well as Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations.

This document is often over 200 pages long – as such, it can take several weeks, or even months, to create. An OSC contains 3 volumes:

1 – Operations Manual

2 – Systems

3 – Safety Assessment

Enrolling on this course counts towards the evidence required in Volume 3, allowing you to prove you are a responsible drone operator and therefore capable of carrying out specific operations.

Course Content

To reduce the likelihood of any delays or additional fees, its best to ensure your application is correct on first submission. The course will provide the tools and knowledge to write a successful Operating Safety Case. As a result, pilots are able to submit their OSC without delay and start using it sooner.

Delegates will gain an understanding of the types of OSC, as well as how to determine your own requirements. Furthermore, the course will demonstrate how to improve your operation procedures, drone system maintenance, and risk management.

iRed’s expert instructors have experience in successfully applying for and using Operating Safety Cases. During the course, the instructor will guide you through each volume to clarify the entire application process.

Involving both theory and practical exercises, this course provides an understanding of how to manage a range of UAV operations. After completing the 3-day course, delegates will write their Operating Safety Case application in their own time. Following this, operators will need to submit their OSC to the CAA for approval.

Who Should Attend

Ultimately, the Operating Safety Case course is ideal for existing drone operators who want to expand their current permissions. Holding an Operating Safety Case enables drone operators to conduct a wide variety of aerial operations. As a result, pilots with an OSC gain a commercial advantage over competitors, as they can fly where others cannot.
